I noticed that on Ubuntu 7.10, which is now on my laptop (byebye Fedora!), the us_de file didn't load anymore. The only change that was necessary, was replacing the first line, "partial default alphanumeric_keys", with "default".
I also didn't use the boottime.kmap.gz. Reloading the keymaps was straightforward (/etc/init.d/keyboard-setup restart). For completeness, I usually apply the keymap with "setxkbmap us_de" (in my .bashrc).
